WORKING IN EXTREME COLD and/or WITH FROZEN MATERIAL
Ozzie’s padding machines have proved on job after job that they function effectively and stand up under the most arduous conditions. That includes extreme winter cold, the most rugged terrain in which pipelines are laid – including the Andes Mountains of South America – and permafrost.
Our machines are also specifically adapted to handle frozen material. The OMS-360’s unique design enables the same machine to physically break up larger pieces of frozen material and feed them into the shaker – without the work being interrupted. The OMS-360 is the world’s only high-volume padding machine with that capability.
CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) INJECTION
CO2 is a widely used injection medium for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in mature oilfields. With many of the world’s onshore oil fields having recovered the easy-to-produce oil, producers seek to increase recoveries and extend field life through EOR projects. Crucial to the CO2 injection process is a network of small-diameter piping that delivers CO2 to the injection wells.
Ozzie’s compact Mini-padder is well suited to backfill and protect those lines. With increased cost of recovery resulting from the CO2 utilized in the extraction process, keeping construction costs down helps to make CO2 injection economically viable as an enhanced recovery method.
Padding is equally applicable for backfilling of EOR injection lines that employ other injection media such as natural gas, hydrocarbon solvents and water. With one man and one machine replacing many trucks and imported material, an Ozzie’s machine can do its part to hold down backfilling costs.
OIL and GAS PIPELINES
Countries around the globe are criss-crossed by literally millions of miles (and kilometers) of hydrocarbon-carrying pipelines, from small-diameter gathering systems to mainlines of up to 72 inch diameter (1,829 mm) that run for hundreds or thousands of miles/kilometers and represent billions of dollars in capital investment. These pipelines are all vulnerable to physical damage and long-term corrosion due to the use of unsorted spoils for backfilling. Oil and gas pipeline failures can have catastrophic results. All oil and gas pipelines benefit from mechanical padding.
This is the sector where modern mechanical padding was born. The less advanced oil and gas pipeline construction practices of the past led to the invention – by Ozzie’s – of the pipeline padder. Today, asset owners require pipeline construction to be faster, more efficient, safer and with improved environmental protection. Pipeline spills or leaks cause enormous problems and are very costly. Asset owners are under tremendous pressure from regulators, interest groups, landowners and the public to improve their safety and environmental performance.
The pipeline padder is the solution to these growing risks and has become the backfilling gold standard. Ozzie’s OPP-300, OPP-200 and OMS-360 are all suitable for oil and gas pipeline work.
WIND and SOLAR POWER PROJECTS
Hundred-plus-megawatt wind farms with 100 or more turbines and dozens of miles of buried cable are sprouting across North America and around the world. This global push for the development of green energy sources provides many opportunities for the alternative energy industry to reduce costs and increase productivity by adopting proven construction techniques from other sectors, such as the pipeline industry, to help in the construction of wind turbine farms and solar panel fields.
Ozzie’s diverse line of padders has a solution for any utility and electrical line backfill need. Ozzie’s can help contractors reduce the environmental impacts of construction, as one of our padders will replace a fleet of material hauling trucks. By reusing the native soil, earth and rocks that come out of the ground, we not only avoid the costs of sourcing and hauling imported fill, we eliminate the risk of soil contamination associated with imported fill. Ozzie’s Mini-padder is ideally suited to padding the narrower trenches typically used for utility lines and cabling.
UTILITY LINE BACKFILL
While large-diameter pipeline construction motivated Ozzie’s invention of the pipeline padder, smaller utility line construction in housing developments around Phoenix, Arizona inspired the concept of the smaller-scale padder – again by Ozzie’s. We recognized that contractors handling these narrower trenches required a light, small machine that maximized mobility and flexibility while lowering hourly operating costs.
More than 15 years ago, Ozzie’s rolled out the world’s first self-contained compact padding unit. Today our refined, state-of-the-art Mini-padder, in which an Ozzie’s developed all-in-one padding head is mated to an industry-leading Liebherr track loader, continues to set the world’s standard in the compact padding machine class.
Assuring reliable supplies of fresh water for residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial uses is an urgent need in many places around the world. In very hot and/or dry climates, buried pipelines are preferable to open canals or aqueducts, which lose water to evaporation. Water pipelines can range from large-diameter mainlines (similar to oil and gas mainline pipelines) that transport large volumes of water over great distances, to small-diameter distribution lines for irrigation systems or end-users.
All of these systems benefit from pipeline padding. Whether the pipe is constructed from steel, plastic or composite material, the system will be more reliable and longer-lived if the trench is properly backfilled and compacted, reducing the risks of damage and distortion or ovulation. Plastic pipes are vulnerable to outright breakage due to insufficient compaction.
Processing spoils into consistent material for backfilling and compaction is sound construction practice across a large range of applications. Mechanical padding improves results and reduces risks in virtually any case where a trench is dug and a man-made line of some sort is placed within. That covers everything from large-diameter hydrocarbon-carrying steel mainlines to plastic water lines to live electrical cables and fibre-optic cabling.
Ozzie’s has been on numerous cleanup jobs varying from a simple yard cleanup to precision racetrack cleaning and extensive beach cleaning. In cleaning operations, the desired material that must be recovered, sorted and stockpiled is the oversized debris itself. Ozzie’s larger machines can be outfitted with various attachments, sized for the customer’s specific needs, to capture the debris falling from the shaker. In these applications, the conveyor can be used to windrow material away from the machine or it can be removed and the cleaned material simply falls through the shaker back onto the ground.
